Recently, local coffee shops in Cancun and Veracruz received a notice from Attorneys Intellectual Property Boutique, which indicated that it represents the interests of Starbucks, requesting them to remove the word Frappuccino from their menus, since it is a trademark registered by the North American company.
According to the letter sent to them, the company registered the Frappuccino trademark in the United States in 1994.
They also indicated that since 2002, this trademark is used in Mexico in beverages such as coffee and tea, therefore a license granted by the company is required in order to name the product for its sale.
The letter states that “desist and withdraw the use, sale, promotion of any commercial activity related to the brand Frappuccino or the variants Frapuchino, Frappucino, and/or Frappucino in its commercial establishment”, menu, posters, web page, social networks and any type of advertising.
Faced with this, the creativity of local merchants was not long in coming through their response on social networks, where in addition to publishing the document, they invited their customers and followers to contribute ideas for a new name for the drink.
We only hope that these coffee shops follow the example of the American company by also registering the name of their product.
